ZoomSafer Can Help You Stay in Touch While Driving Safely: Video
By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor
Have you ever had one of those "Aha!" moments when using your smartphone while trying to drive? Such situations generally involve near-misses or perhaps even hits where someone is injured and you realize you should be paying attention to the road instead of the smartphone?
ZoomSafer has a solution that ensures you focus on your driving and leave the communications for when you arrive at your destination. To provide more insight on their solution, Mike Costello, chief operating officer of ZoomSafer, visited the TMC media booth at CTIA (News - Alert) 2010 for an interview captured in full on this video.
The company was born out of an Aha! moment as one of its founders is a crackberry type of guy. He had gotten multiple reckless driving tickets in a matter of months and when he knocked a neighbor kid off his bike when backing out of his driveway, he realized he was fortunate the child was not badly hurt.
He wanted to get help making better decisions, but what would an app look like? The result is ZoomSafer, commercial software for smartphones to prevent distracted driving.
"We built an application that helps you be safe, legal and productive," said Costello. "Essentially it is an app you can download to your phone that you can make it the way you want it. You configure the phone to create an abstinence environment so you are not tempted to use the phone."
Targeted to a massively horizontal market - young drivers/families and small businesses/enterprises, the app enables the use of the smartphone to be truly hands free.
The icon is downloaded to the smartphone and the app detects when the smartphone is moving faster than 15 MPH, automatically activating the safe driving mode.
There is really nothing to see on the phone as they don't want you interacting with the phone while in safe mode. The app then manages outbound and inbound communications.
You have the choice of whether or not you want to make outbound calls while in the safe mode. For inbound: all, some or none. Auto-replies are sent on your behalf that you are driving and want to stay focused on the road.
All messages land quietly on the phone and when you arrive at your destination; all messages are waiting. The application is available at zoomsafer.com and at a number of retail locations, through an affiliate program and fleet programs. For more information on this app, view the video in full.
