Black Duck Enriches Koders.com Code Search Engine
TMCnet Contributing Editor
Black Duck Software, a global software company that manages the recycling of open source software components, today announced the addition of approximately 100 million lines of C/C++ codes to the volume of open source software managed in Koders.com code search engine.
Black Duck acquired Koders in April, and the two companies worked together for the benefit of more than 30,000 individual developers or organizations that rely on code search engines for reusable software codes, algorithms, examples, and methods.
With the addition of C/C++ from open source and other licenses, Koders.com now contains 15 percent more codes in its code search database, positioning it as a comprehensive source for reusable open source code for software developers.
The new set of C/C++ codes comes from the assets of csourcesearch.net, a Web site dedicated to locating and updating information about different types of open source packages such as communications tools, software development libraries, plugins, games, and desktop environments.
According to Black Duck, the new codes available through Koders are of special use to developers of embedded software or firmware used by the consumer device and embedded systems industries. There are many such popular projects available at Koders. Some of them include GeeXboX, a Linux distribution that acts as a standalone media player, and lm_sensors, which offers essential tools for monitoring hardware health.
“When we acquired Koders, our promise to that community of users and to Black Duck customers was that we’d make searches even more productive and valuable, and this is a very tangible step in that direction,” said Douglas Levin, founder and CEO of Black Duck.
Black Duck also plans to augment Koders with code and metadata from Black Duck KnowledgeBase, according to Levin. Black Duck KnowledeBase is a comprehensive database with tens of billions of lines of open source code for developers.
Black Duck offers different services, including Code Center for finding, tracking and selecting open source code and Protex for validation and compliance. When merged with the powerful code search tool from Koders, Black Duck provides the complete solution for reusing open source for software development.
