HTC, Verizon Wireless Unveil DROID ERIS Android Powered Mobile Phone

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor

HTC reportedly announced the launch of its DROID ERIS an Android (News - Alert) powered mobile phone. The devices, which combine the features of the powerful Android platform and the Verizon Wireless network, will be available in Verizon (News - Alert) Wireless Communications Stores across the United States.

DROID ERIS features the HTC (News - Alert) Sense, a user experience from HTC, which brings users together and customizes the mobile experience according to their needs, company sources said.

Customers will be able to personalize a seven-panel wide home screen on the DROID ERIS using several widgets designed to make important information more accessible on the surface. The innovative “scenes” feature allows customers to create multiple screens with different widgets and shortcuts. This transforms HTC’s DROID ERIS from a work phone to a play phone with a touch of the finger.

The new Android-powered device organizes interactions by person making it possible to access text messages, e-mails, phone calls and even Flickr streams and Facebook (News - Alert) updates from a single contact card. HTC Sense offers a unique experience and is supported by an array of mobile features like a 3.2 inch capacitive touch screen and trackball interface and 5.0 megapixel auto focus camera.

Other features include expandable memory with pre-installed 8 GB microSD card, USB mass storage support and Bluetooth capability. Wi-Fi support, 3.5 mm headset connectivity and integrated GPS are also provided. A digital compass with a sensor which enables the phone to know the direction it is facing and a smart dialer which makes dialing by name, number or initials easy is also included.

DROID ERIS from HTC also includes a full HTML browser with Flash Lite capabilities, seamless compatibility with Google (News - Alert) services like Google Maps, Gmail, Google Search and others, company officials said.

Verizon sources said that the devices will be available from Verizon Wireless Communications Stores and online at starting today for $99.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate. A new two-year customer agreement on a voice plan with an e-mail feature or e-mail plan is necessary. The mail-in rebate will be available for customers in the form of a debit card. Customers can use the card as cash, anywhere debit cards are accepted.
