Headsets: Hands-free for the Topless? (Cars, That Is)
By Michelle Amodio, TMCnet Contributor
Car connoisseurs and naturalists alike have always enjoyed convertibles because they allow drivers to feel the speed of the air around them, yet lounge in a luxurious seat and remain safer than their two-wheeled biker counterparts.
One unfortunate drawback, particularly in the mobile phone era, is talking and driving are quite difficult in a car with the top down. The decibels of a loud engine, the roar of the wind and other moving vehicles make hearing the other person on the end of your hands-free device an impossible feat.
Believe it or not, a World War I technology is being used in one new gadget suited for convertible cars. IASUS Concepts recently introduced the NT3 throat mic headset, a mic which was originally developed for military pilots and tank drivers. Able to pick up vocal vibrations directly from the users’ larynx, the NT3 is an honest solution for convertible talkers as it delivers sound while eliminating extraneous noise.
This recent re-invention has helped with conversations within the carriage, but what about telecommunications? Other technologies designed to limit background noise continued to remain bothersome until the reintroduction of this technology.
The advantage of this is that it does not work using the transmission of sound through the movement of air, but it picks up the actual vibrations from your throat.
The NT3 also features a coiled acoustic earpiece, tangle-resistant braided wiring, and a magnetic clasp that will release in the event of potential strangulation. The headset is VOX-capable, offers various PTT options, and its multi-adapter allows it to work with most major mobile phones.
According to IASUS, the NT3 Throat Mic Headset is also useful for motorcycle racing, scooters, paintball, war games, and high-velocity extreme sports such as skydiving, hang gliding, paragliding, BMX, freestyle skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, wakeboarding, and waterskiing.
The device is compatible with 2.5mm SP for mobile phones, cordless phones, and XBox.
