CodeWeavers Releases CrossOver Chromium Browser for Mac and Linux

CodeWeavers announced the release of CrossOver Chromium for Mac and Linux, which will be available as a free download immediately. CrossOver Chromium is being offered as a proof-of-concept for Mac and Linux users to experience the power of the new Chromium open source browser. CodeWeavers develops software products to transform Mac OS X and Linux into Windows-compatible operating systems. The focus of CodeWeavers is currently on its core technology, called Wine.

“We did this to prove a point,” said CodeWeaver president and CEO Jeremy White, about the release. “The message is very simply this: if you are a Windows software vendor, and you want to get your product into new markets, you should pay attention to Wine. Wine is a powerful tool for bringing your product to new audiences in the Mac and Linux spaces. And in many cases Wine is faster and more economical than doing a native port.”

Chromium is an open source browser project that aims to build a safer, faster and more stable way for all internet users to experience the web. The Chromium codebase is the basis for Google’s (News - Alert) Chrome browser. CrossOver Chromium is a Mac and Linux port for the open source Chromium Web browser.

CrossOver Chromium showcases the power of Wine which is an open source technology allowing Windows executables to be run as-if-natively on Intel (News - Alert)-based Unix operating systems such as Linux and Mac OS X. Wine allows CodeWeavers to migrate technology from Windows to alternate platforms quickly. Since CrossOver Chromium is still in its early stages, this release should not be viewed as a production release by the users.

John Rizzo, a Blogger for MacWindows.com has stated that “Chromium understandably generated a lot of buzz when it was released last week. Anything Google does is big news. It’s intriguing that CodeWeavers could pick up that ball as rapidly as they did and run with it. I’m sure that there will be a lot of Mac users out there who will want to try this out, if nothing else just to see what all the excitement is about.”
