Freescale Semiconductor (News - Alert) is now a member of the LiMo Foundation, an organization dedicated to developing a Linux platform for mobile devices. The company will be helping to build open source solutions for handset original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
LiMo Foundation (News - Alert) is a consortium of mobile industry leaders working together within an open and transparent governance model, with shared leadership and shared decision making. The goal is to deliver an open and globally consistent handset software platform based on Mobile Linux for use by the entire mobile industry.
“Freescale’s innovation in the mobile communications ecosystem has been consistent and influential from the dawn of the mobile age to the industry’s current pursuit of a truly open mobile platform,” said Morgan Gillis, executive director at LiMo Foundation, in a statement.
Freescale Semiconductor designs and manufacture of embedded semiconductors for the automotive, consumer, industrial, networking and wireless markets. The privately held company is based in Austin, Texas, and has design, research and development, manufacturing and sales operations in more than 30 countries.
“Joining LiMo Foundation is yet another example of our commitment to Open OS platform solutions,” said David Patterson, director of product management for Freescale’s Cellular Products Group, in a statement. “Freescale’s integration of Open OS solutions like the LiMo Platform, into our cellular platforms, enables OEMs to use fewer resources and reduce their overall handset development time.”
Basic LiMo Foundation members have the ability to contribute to LiMo’s output and can access foundation code. Core members have broader leadership and participation opportunities through eligibility for election to the Management Board and Executive Council, and are also allowed to commercially distribute the common LiMo code with their products.
