NTT DoCoMo's 905i Series Incorporates Epson's GPS Technology

Epson’s Assisted Global Positioning System (A-GPS) will soon be incorporated into the 905i series mobile phones produced by NTT DoCoMo (News - Alert). This new reception technology will be used for each of the eight models in the 905i series phones.

Since December 2006, when the 903i series phones were released, all mobile phone models in the 90X group were fitted with Epson’s S4E19863 GPS component. From this batch, 12 million models have been shipped. The S4E19863 is the sector’s smallest GPS module. It makes use of SAW filters and other peripheral devices that are used in mobile phone handsets, and enables them for mounting in restricted spaces. The 905i series will now be including both this GPS function as well as integrated LSI. This will allow NTT DoCoMo to expand its range of GPS-enabled content services.

The GPS components developed by Epson allow for a far greater signal capacity than conventional GPS, providing signal detection that is up to twelve times greater than most GPS models, allowing it to detect faint indoor signals as well as clear outdoor signals. Epson’s model also incorporates 3GPP-compliant position modes, which include MS-Based, MS-Assisted, and Autonomous. This means that performance will not be affected by network changes in different areas, whether indoors, outdoors, or in transit. Customers will be able to access local services and make emergency calls wherever they are. This will be an important selling point to customers concerned about their access to emergency services and the safety contact options available to them through their networks.
