IBM, Novell Team to Tap Open Source App Servers
By Niladri Sekhar Nath TMCnet Contributing Editor
In a bid to grab a bigger share of the growing open source application server
market, IBM and Novell (News - Alert) have decided to enter into collaboration. As per the agreement, Novell will deliver and support WebSphere Application Server Community Edition (WAS CE) as part of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.
Teaming with Novell will definitely make IBM's (News - Alert) open source-based application server the most comprehensive one in the market. In addition, both the companies are trying hard to expand the customer base by offering support and migration tools to help JBoss users to quickly and easily move to WAS CE.
The combination of WAS CE and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server from Novell will prove highly advantageous for enterprise customers with distributed computing environments, particularly in the retail and financial services industries.
By joining forces with Novell, IBM will be able to access Novell's SMB market leadership. Alternatively, Novell will be able to take advantage of IBM's worldwide sales force. Both IBM and Novell aim to put up an enterprise-ready open source alternative to Jboss.
"Customers today are looking for an integrated solution to solve their application development needs," said Roger Levy, senior vice president and general manager of Open Platform Solutions for Novell, in a statement. "Novell and IBM have partnered to bring customers a best-in-class experience by delivering two powerful software platforms through one channel. Now, when customers need support for their open source operating system or their open source application server, they can get it with one phone call to Novell."
Meanwhile, IBM is also planning to launch the next version of WAS CE -- WAS CE 2.0. WAS CE 2.0 comes with Java EE 5 standard support facilitating greater developer productivity to reduce costs, code re-usability, leverage existing assets.
"By teaming with Novell, we're able to provide customers around the world with unmatched open source technologies and support," said Tom Rosamilia, general manager, IBM Application and Integration Middleware
, in a statement. "The one millionth distribution of WAS CE validates the fact that we're meeting the needs of developers and businesses looking to embrace open source-based technologies, and the agreement with Novell allows us to take that success to the next level."
Using, WAS CE, developers will be able to reduce the complexity of application development by pre-integrating the most common services for building applications. Thanks to core open source technology from the Java EE 5 certified Apache Geronimo application server, WAS CE 2.0 helps customers deploy a service oriented architecture (SOA) as well.
