Linux Users Recognize GoDaddy.com for Open Source Offerings
By Michael Dinan TMCnet Editor
The magazine of one of the most prominent open source development tools is hailing a Scottsdale, Arizona-based Internet site as its “Favorite Linux-Friendly Web Hosting Company.”
According to the “Linux Journal,” GoDaddy.com won an annual Readers’ Choice award for working hard on its Linux hosting offerings.
“Obviously, Go Daddy has made tremendous strides with our readership,” said Linux Journal Publisher Carlie Fairchild, according to the company’s Web site.
Go Daddy officials say their customers can now use their new Cron feature – a service that allows Linux customers to run a task on a scheduled basis – to schedule updates of content, e-mail daily archives of forums or create a custom job that fits specific needs.
“Go Daddy customers also have Database Backup and Restore options, the ability to integrate Google (News - Alert) Webmaster Tools and Password Protected Directories, a feature that allows the customer to limit Web access through their hosting accounts,” the company’s officials say.
The name “Linux” comes from the Linux kernel, started in 1991 by Linus Torvalds. The system’s utilities and libraries usually come from the GNU operating system, announced in 1983 by Richard Stallman. The GNU contribution is the basis for the alternative name GNU/Linux.
Generally known for its use in servers, Linux is supported by corporations such as Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Novell, Oracle Corporation, Red Hat, and Sun Microsystems (News - Alert). It’s used as an operating system for a wide variety of computer hardware, including desktop computers, mobile phones and routers.
GoDaddy.com officials say their site provides Linux customers a newly supported application frameworks as well, including a new Web-based File Manager and Editor.
“GoDaddy.com additionally offers its Hosting Connections portfolio featuring one-click install applications to enhance Web sites,” company officials say. “GoDaddy.com has also added a highly requested application, Drupal, a free software program allowing customers to publish and manage Web content.”
Go Daddy officials say their company has been honored before.
This year, company officials say, it was named “Best Registrar” by Domain Name Wire recently, and also received the “Domainers’ Choice Award for Best Hosting Company 2008.” Last year, The Go Daddy Group, Inc. appeared on the Deloitte (News - Alert) Technology Fast 500 list.
